Lessons Learned in the Class – SOC 205
One of the important lessons is the role of the Supreme Court in changing the course of society. In the landmark ruling in the Loving v. Virginia 388 U.S., the Supreme Court declared it was illegal to restrict interracial marriages. The landmark ruling was effective in allowing people to intermarry. Today, society is different due to the ruling that made it easy for people to shed off their ethnic differences and embrace one another. The Supreme Court has an important role to play in ruling on the controversial issues society is facing today. I learned that the Supreme Court requires sober, strong, people-minded judges to rule on controversial issues. The government of the day should ensure justice and fairness prevail in the selection of the judges. Politicizing the process may ruin the future of the country.
My viewpoint about the Supreme Court has changed during the course since I learned about the role of the court in ruling on controversial issues. The decision to rule on the intermarriage issue was striking to me. Similarly, the court has today ruled on contemporary issues such as LGBTQ. The country should continue holding the Supreme Court judges in high esteem since they have a role to play in determining the course of justice in the country. Another issue that changed my perspective as a learner is that the Supreme Court has the power to determine which cases to hear or deny. It is important to learn that some issues may require Congressional input such as policy development. The Supreme Court makes diverse considerations while determining cases and choosing which issues to deal with. The lessons are profound and critical in my future classes about the criminal justice system.
